時逢1670年左右的歐洲中部地方。肆虐數百年的黑死病終於得以被克服。文明的世界得以復興。人們開始將原本簡單的木造房屋擴建、整修。農田也正待耕耘、播種及收成。人們以粥糜、麵包及蔬菜維生。長年的瘟疫也鼓勵人們多多攝取肉類（隨著財富的成長，此習慣也延續至今）。

一局《農家樂》的遊戲將進行14個回合。每回合中，你要將你的1名家庭成員放在1個行動格上，並執行上面提供的行動。可執行的行動會描繪在遊戲版圖上。按順時針方向，玩家輪流將1名家庭成員放置在1個行動格上，直到所有玩家將各自的所有家庭成員都放完。

在這過程中你們會彼此互相干擾，因為每個行動格每回合只能被1名家庭成員所佔據。在所有家庭成員都被放置之前，不能拿回已被放置的成員。你們的目標是為自己的家庭收集食物並發展自己的農莊版圖，以獲取更多得分。

貼紙「石造烤爐」請貼到主要發展板上的第二張「磚造烤爐」名稱上（石造烤爐的建造需求上，石頭比磚塊多）；貼紙「建造柵欄」請貼到四季擴充板上的「進造柵欄」名稱上；最多文字的黃色貼紙，請貼到四季擴充板上冬季的行動格文字區域（也就是說，現在若使用生小孩行動，需要支付2根木頭與一些食物）。
